The Climate Refugees Story

Climate Refugees poster 2010, directed by Michael Nash. Beverly Hills Productions.

Our Beginning

  1. In 2009, filmmaker Michael P. Nash and producing partner Justin Hogan embarked on a journey to capture the profound impact of climate change on humanity. Spanning across 48 countries and various corners of the globe, Nash's film crew discovered a convergence point within society. This intersection showcased the collision of overpopulation, excessive consumption, dwindling resources, and a shifting climate. The result was a massive climate migration, forcing tens of millions of climate refugees to uproot themselves in search of fundamental necessities such as clean water, food and shelter.
  2. In 2010, the documentary CLIMATE REFUGEES had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, followed by a release on Netflix. Since then, it has reached esteemed figures like Presidents, Prime Ministers, policymakers, and educational institutions worldwide. This cinematic work shed unprecedented light on the human dimension of climate change. In recognition of this film's contribution, Nash was honored as one of the "Top Ten Filmmakers For The Planet" by MovieMaker Magazine.
  3. In 2024, acclaimed "Climate Refugees" etched its name in history as the sole documentary chosen for inclusion in an arts and humanities lunar time capsule, featuring works from 222 master artists spanning the last 2000 years. On February 22, 2024, Climate Refugees landed on the lunar surface, becoming the first to land on the surface of the moon.  Nash's celebrated Sundance creation joined esteemed luminaries such as Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Bob Dylan, and Elvis in this lunar museum capsule. Designed to endure for billions of years on the lunar surface, this compilation, through the diverse lenses of 222 artists, pledges to safeguard the human narrative and our earthly existence for the enlightenment of future generations.

    The Backstory

    1. On February 15, 2024, a SpaceX rocket launched from NASA's Launchpad 39A, embarking on a historic mission to the moon. The spacecraft successfully landed on the lunar surface on February 22, 2024, marking the first time in 50 years that Americans had set foot on the moon.
    2. Aboard the mission was an arts and humanities time capsule, carefully curated to preserve the story of our humanity through the works of 222 artists from the last 2,000 years. This extraordinary collection included masterpieces from icons like Beethoven, Rembrandt, Elvis Presley, and Nash's 2010 documentary Climate Refugees—the sole documentary chosen for this prestigious honor.
    3. When the filmmaker learned that his film had been selected, he requested that his Stamp Collection and impact-driven art collection also be included. The art collection, which aims to illuminate the human face of climate change, climate migration was designed to help drive global awareness and inspire action. Each of the individuals within the collection a real people that Nash met as he traveled to 48 countries shooting the film, Climate Refugees.
    4. Recognizing its importance of the collection, the curators of the lunar mission agreed to include the collection into the time capsule. This decision ensures that the art will not only be preserved on the moon but will also become a global exhibition of impact, bringing attention to the urgent issues of climate change and humanity’s shared responsibility.
    5. As the collection journeys across the globe, it serves as a powerful testament to the stories of those most affected by our changing environment. Featured in key global events and viewed by heads of state and global citizens alike, this body of work transcends traditional boundaries. In a profound gesture of advocacy, the artist, Nash, ensures that the collection is exhibited without cost, allowing the narrative to resonate freely and amplifying the voices of the voiceless.
    6. Part of the collection's mission is to have each art piece transformed into an official postage stamp, used in countries around the world.
